Yaxha
Because of the reputation and the prominence of Tikal, few people bother with this little treasure. It is a great site and you are essentially, unlike Tikal, left to your own schedule for a day. A young German girl and I arranged for the ride to Yaxha through the Los Amigos Hostel and had a great afternoon there until closing time. |
Naturally, no ceremonial city center would be without the ball court |
A lot of pyramids at this site are still awaiting excavation |
And wherever you go over here, they are already there, always have been and always will be |
Since the brochure was stolen with the rest of my things in El Salvador, I have little information on this |
From the top of the unexcavated astronomers pyramid we saw this one and headed over there, which took us to a tidy little plaza with three pyramids and other buildings |
The German girl with whom I spent the day. She is one tireless explorer and is traveling solo around all of Guatemala, then will get her dive certification in Honduras. Tough cookie. Teaches English to locals in Guate. |
I know, I know. Probably too much of me. BTW, everything you see me wearing was also stolen in El Salvador |
A last look back and we were heading for the main pyramid of Yaxha |
Nope, that's not it. We saw this one on the way |
This is the one, and it can't be climbed because the steps have not been restored, but you get to the top via the wooden access staircase you can see on the left. |
Sitting up here, waiting for the sunset, but the weather was not our friend, so this was as good as it got. We didn't complain. |
